"I'll Be There For Sure!"

Created 1984, but not by me. I didn't save the reference.

One night I went to visit a 12 year old boy who had visited my church. He lived with his mother who was separated from his father, a drunkard. When I got to his house, his mother was there but he was not. I witnessed to her. She said she was saved. I waited for the boy a little while, then I said " I hate to miss him, but I can't wait much longer." But she said, "Oh, wait just a little longer. I am sure he will be here soon and it would break his heart to miss you." I waited, and in just a few minutes he came in.

When he saw me, his eyes lit up, thrilled that the preacher would come to visit him! We talked for a minute and I asked him if he had been saved. He said he hadn't but he had been thinking about it. I took my New Testament and showed him that even though everyone had done bad things which displeased God, He still loved us so much He sent His only Son, Jesus, to pay for our sins by His death on the cross. And when we put all our trust in Him as our Lord and Savior, we can know our sins are forgiven and Jesus lives in our hearts and Heaven is our home. It wasn't long until we prayed together and he asked Jesus to save him. Before I left I asked him to come to church and tell the church what had happen and get baptized. I will never forget what he said. He looked up at me and said, " I'll be there for sure."

Sunday came and I looked for him but he wasn't there. I was disappointed. The message was preached, and we started the invitation. All of a sudden, down the aisle came the little boy. He looked a mess, his clothes were dirty and wrinkled and his hair uncombed. But he walked right up to me, stuck out his hand, smiled and said, "I told you I'd be here."

Later, I found out why he was late. His drunkard father had picked him up on Saturday and taken him with him from bar to bar. 10:00 o'clock at night the boy slipped away and found a parked car and spent the night in it. The next morning he got up and walked about five miles to church. That was the reason he was late.

Later, he moved and I lost track of him. Three years later I received word that he had drowned. When I heard this, I bowed my head and thanked God that I had waited that night for him to come home. One day I will see him again in Heaven, and I can't help but believe that he will come up to me, smile and say, "I told you I'd be there."
